Antique purple brocade with dark black velvet trimmed in gold tape. Heavy three dimensional embroidery of IHS and rays of light in gold wire work on the reverse. The color purple is usually worn during Lent or Advent, as purple represents penance, preparation, and sacrifice. It is also worn at funerals because of the its connection to mourning. Purple vestments are donned to remind funeral-goers to pray for the penance and absolution of the departed. Circa 1900
