These small carvings, were 18th c pilgrim samples, for the sanctuary of Wies. The original image of Christ touching a pillar , dates to 1730. The cult of Weis sanctuary began after a peasant by the name of Maria Lory after praying in front of a sculpture of this subject, when she saw tears running down the sculptures face.
Images of this statue were circulated through printed images (see intaglio engraved reference 1750 by Klauber) and as well small carved sculptures such as this became objects of devotion and much sought after by pilgrims.
