Collection: d1 Art Nouveau
The Art Nouveau period influenced architecture, interiors, product design, jewelry and fashion in the late 19th to early 20th century. It favored a fluidity of line taken from the natural world and earth/natural tones over sharp angles and bright colors. Evolving from the Pre Raphaelites and Arts and Crafts aesthetics palettes, Art Nouveau emphasized a more curvilinear whiplash design style which helped to soften the huge advances in industrialization. The utilization of modern materials in ways that allowed for a highly decorative style were key.
The artists who exemplify this movement include Alphonse Mucha, whose jewel-toned posters featured beautiful women amid floral and flowing geometric swirls; and the artist/architect Antoni Gaudi, who created large concrete architectural confections that reflected the movement's homage to nature in a Neo Gothic and Orientalist style of his own, including the church of the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain.
