An original lacquer work ladies dressing mirror that has been in my own collection since the late 90's is in original condition including mirror, was created for export to the America's , particularly New England Boston area, through maritime trade. The style of lacquer work, created in Canton is of a style that originated in Japan, and was taught to the Chinese as a tradition in continuum from a style of work that was done in the 16th and 17th c. The minute lacquer style also mimics shagreen. 1825-30.
An almost identical example can be found in Crossman's China Trade and is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum.
Excellent original condition retained from staying within the same New England family since the early 19th c.
